Municipality of O Carballiño
O Carballiño was born at the foot of the road (17th century) in the lands of the monastery of Oseira (12th century), one of the most powerful abbeys of the late Middle Ages. It became the hub of the muleteers after its fair (18th century) was popularized; increased general interest with the diffusion of the curative powers of its thermal waters (19th century); undertook industrial and commercial initiatives, creating factories for paper, wood, soap, and tanneries (19th century), and sought new horizons, first, beyond the Atlantic waters (19th and 20th centuries) and, later, in Central Europe (20th century), as if the condition of emigration came to him with its birth.
Its name inherited from the place, as it happens with so many. The researchers who have made known the genesis of the toponym agree on this, although they disagree about its origin. It seems to prevail, however, the theory of the affectionate appellation, which in Galicia is usually a diminutive, as the ultimate reference. According to this, O Carballiño would indicate affection towards that place populated by oaks (carballos) or perhaps in which one of them excelled.
